Original Abstract

In 1998 a flexible ATM (Asynchronous Transfer Mode) network was designed in the Department of Telecommunications, Brno University of Technology, Czech Republic. The ATM network consists of two active elements - switches (the Cisco technology is used) and it is connected to the Brno university high-speed network. A simple ring network is designed in this way. It is in actual operation, but it is used for intensive research at the same time. This network is suitable for the design and research of new services (ISDN, etc.), for changing of the existing logical ring structure to a new physical structure, and for the optimization and testing of the possibilities of a multimedia ATM network. Two of the ATM applications are the transport of CBR (Constant Bit Rate) services and LAN Emulation.
