Original Abstract

There are several dimensions of digital video image quality evaluation, generally splitted into subjective and objective measurements. Subjective measurements are obtained as the human observers' opinion on the video image quality, while objective measurements are performed with an aid of instrumentation, calibrated scales and mathematical algorithms. The subjective quality evaluation based on group of observers is very time consuming and exhausting. There are various objective metrics available, designed to substitute the subjective tests. The chapter contains an overview of subjective test procedures and objective test metrics. A summary of different available approaches to objective testing, dasic principles of full-reference and comparison metrics, their performance and applicability are outlined. Experimental results based on computer simulations and real laboratory environment measurements made by authors themselves are included to support the theoretical conclusions.
