Original Abstract

Mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) genes may be used for DNA barcoding. It allows quick species identification of unknown sample. Intent of DNA barcoding is identification of new and closely related species. We report similarity/dissimilarity analysis of COI mitochondrial gene sequences of seventeen species of birds of prey. Their DNA sequences were represented in numerical form based on nucleotide densities. The similarity/dissimilarity analysis was based on evaluation of Euclidean distances between sequences. Results of similarity/dissimilarity analysis of sequences in numerical representation were also compared with phylogenetic three based on Jukes-Cantor method.
