Original Abstract

This contribution presents results obtained during the wide study focused on the generation of the diaphragm discharge in water solutions of electrolytes. As a DC non-pulsed high voltage was used for the discharge creation, two kinds of plasma streamers with different polarity were propagated on each side of the diaphragm. This dual character of the discharge as well as the thermal (bubble) theory of discharge ignition in water has been confirmed by records obtained with the fast digital camera. The discharge was initiated in bubbles of water vapour created in the pin-hole. Electrical measurements of voltage and current during the breakdown phenomena were also carried out and the influence of electrolyte kind and concentration (solution conductivity) on the discharge creation was studied. Increasing solution conductivity shifted the discharge breakdown to the lower voltage, however, it did not influence the total discharge power supplied into the reactor.
