Original Abstract

The study is focused on the investigation of the DC diaphragm discharge in water solutions of various organic compounds, especially organic dyes. This type of the discharge is created in a small pin-hole in the dielectric diaphragm located between two high voltage electrodes. Various reactive species such as radicals and ions produced by the discharge are precursors for consequent chemical reactions. The degradation processes were studied in water solutions of selected organic dyes (Direct Blue 106 and Solvent Yellow 94). The spectroscopic observations were carried out in these solutions and the influence of experimental conditions on the emission intensity of selected species (OH radicals, hydrogen and oxygen atoms etc.) was studied. Dissociation of studied organic compounds by the discharge was dependent mainly on the applied high voltage and on the initial solution conductivity (i.e. electrolyte concentration), respectively.
