Josef Gočár se v roce 2000 stal největší osobností české architektury 20. století. Žádné velké překvapení to nebylo. Průkopník nových forem, kmotr rondokubismu, apoštol funkcionalismu, etalon urbanismu. Ten, který na nároží Celetné ulice a Ovocného trhu v Praze vetkl Dům U Černé Matky Boží, do tváře Hradce Králové vepsal příběh moderního města a naučil jeho stavby mluvit jazykem neomítaných cihel. Velký duch a velký tvůrce? Zajisté. Ale také člověk, kterému se nevyhýbaly ani nejprofánnější lidské vlastnosti. „Třeba při boji o stavbu hradecké městské spořitelny neváhal říct o svém žáku Janu Rejchlovi, že je líný a chamtivý,“ říká ve velkém rozhovoru pro Quartier k letošnímu 140. výročí architektova narození historik architektury Ladislav Zikmund-Lender. English abstract

In 2000, Josef Gočár became the greatest figure in Czech architecture of the 20th century. It was no big surprise. Pioneer of new forms, godfather of Rondo Cubism, apostle of functionalism, standard of urbanism. The one who woven the House at the Black Madonna on the corner of Celetná Street and the Fruit Market in Prague inscribed the story of a modern city on the face of Hradec Králové and taught its buildings to speak the language of unplastered bricks. Great spirit and great creator? Certainly. But also a man who did not shy away from even the most profane human qualities. "For example, during the fight for the construction of the Hradec Králové City Savings Bank, he did not hesitate to tell his pupil Jan Rejchl that he was lazy and greedy," says Ladislav Zikmund-Lender, an architectural historian, in a large interview with Quartier on the 140th anniversary of the architect's birth this year.
