Original Abstract

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) are microbial biopolymers which occur in the cell as intracellular granules and serve as a carbon and energy source. PHA have comparable physicochemical properties as some petrochemical plastics, furthermore, they are completely biodegradable. Cyanobacteria are ecologically important prokaryotic gram‑negative organisms capable of oxygenic photosynthesis. They also synthesize many secondary metabolites such as glycogen, carotenoids, but importantly also the PHA. In our study firstly we investigated the effect of NaCl in media on PHA production. Secondly, we looked into mixotrophic growth of cyanobacteria with several compounds such as acetate, propionate, glucose or their combinations.
