Original Abstract

The paper is concerned with the properties of solid-state photomultiplier in range-finding applications. The photomultiplier has several advantages over avalanche photodiodes, in particular a significantly lower working voltage and a linear response. Analyzed in the paper is a photomultiplier with capacitive coupling to individual avalanche cells, which filters-out the recharge process that does not carry information on photon arrival times. Techniques of correlated averaging are demonstrated with the aim to reach high sensitivity and suppression of the background radiation.
