Original Abstract

Polyhydroxyalkanoates are suitable alternative for petrochemical plastics. These are microbial polyesters, fully biodegradable and biocompatible. Their disadvantage is high production costs. For this reason, ways are constantly sought to reduce these costs. One of these possibilities is the use of thermophilic microorganisms. One of the representatives of thermophilic organisms producing polyhydroxyalkanoates are strains of the genus Caldimonas. They are generally gram-negative, rod-shaped cells. Their optimum growth is around 50 °C. Production conditions were tested at various mineral media, temperatures, carbon substrates and precursors suitable for synthesis of copolymers possessing superior material properties. Based on our results it can be stated that bacteria of the genus Caldimonas seem to be very promising candidates for industrial production of polyhydroxyalkanoates at elevated temperatures.
