Original Abstract

Natural draft cooling towers are very specific constructions that are formed by a hyperboloid thin-walled shell. Therefore, they have very high surface area in relation to the total built-in concrete volume, and they are significantly more sensitive to external influences than in the case of massive structures. In particular, there are negative effects of changes in humidity, temperature, freezing, atmospheric CO2, etc., resulting in the gradual degradation of the reinforced concrete by physical and chemical influences, such as concrete carbonation. It is essential to keep the cooling towers in perfect condition because, together with other objects, they are a necessary unit for the safe operation of the power plant. Construction-technical surveys are part of reinforced concrete structures’ care. Through these surveys, the current state of the structure is continuously monitored so that any major development of a failure can be detected in time and an optimal rehabilitation intervention can be planned and performed. The rehabilitation typically comprises a secondary protection, usually a coating system, with different parameters for various parts of the structure. Using the control tests that are also a part of the remediation intervention, the condition of the work performed and quality of the materials used is verified. The control activity is conducted mainly to achieve a high quality of rehabilitation, and this will result in a noticeable extension of the service time of the rehabilitated structure.
