Original Abstract

Evolutionary engineering is useful, quite simple and effective approach how to gain microbial strains with required characteristics on phenotype level (e.g. better growth, producing capability, ability of utilization new carbon sources etc.) without requirement for knowledge of genetics characteristics of original strain. On the other hand experiments are quite time-consuming and it is necessary to screen a lot of evolved phenotypes. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are microbial polyesters which could serve as suitable replacement for traditional petrochemical plastics due to their biodegradability and biocompatibility. Approaches of evolutionary engineering could be applied to gain microorganisms producing PHAs with required properties.
