Original Abstract

In spite of the fact that the thermal processing of wastes is not the only way of waste treatment it is efficient due to the range of advantages like a substantial reduction of volume and mass of the waste (residues), rate of processing, possibility of the treatment of hazardous wastes, and last but not least possibility of efficient offgas cleaning. In case of utilizing energy released during thermal oxidizing (incineration of municipal solid waste (MSW) or hazardous waste) for generation of process steam, for cogeneration (combined heat and power systems CHP) we can consider the thermal processing as a certain kind of recycling. Since waste has sufficient heating value it belongs to renewable energy sources which enables to save fossil fuel as a primary energy source. Then we speak about waste to energy systems (WTE). In addition to environmental benefit an effective utilizing of released energy has a positive impact on economics of the process including reduced cost for operation. WTE can partially or markedly compensate costs for the treatment of various wastes (costs for auxiliary fuel for incineration of low calorific industrial and/or hazardous wastes) and the other way round it can bring a considerable profit to the operator in case of the treatment of wastes with high calorific value.
