Original Abstract

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are bacterial polyesters which are considered as biodegradable and environmentally-friendly alternative to petrochemical plastics. Poly-3-hydroxybutyrate is typical but in the plastics industry, the copolymer of poly-3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate (P3HB-co-3HV) is significantly better utilized due to its material properties. The aim was to use the concept of evolutionary engineering to obtain strains capable of utilization levulinic acid for production P3HB-co-3HV. Adaptation tests were carried out with the Cupriavidus necator H16 strain. Higher LA concentrations have been shown to significantly reduce the growth of the selected strain. Adaptation tests led to an increase in the proportion of PHV in the copolymer produced.
