Original Abstract

Variation in sap flow patterns along stem radius (i.e. at different sapwood depths below the cambium) and at different points (azimuths) around the stem circumference was measured using the heat field deformation method with multi-point sensors. Such a technique, simultaneously applying 50-80 point sensors on a single stem cross section, allowed us to characterize a 3D patttern of sapflow in stems. This was demonstrated on large pine and oak trees characterized by very contrasting flow pattterns across sapwood. The resente 3D pattern of sap flow across stems seems to be the most objective picture of total flow per tree at a given moment. 3D flow pattern presented as an "opened tree" allows better visualization of variation on deeper sapwood layers. A ring, where colors represent sap flow density in a circular pattern provides an alternative realistic flow visualization method.
