Original Abstract

An attempt to compare polyhedral and spherical representation of grains in discrete element modelling of railway ballast is presented. The polyhedral shape brings advantage in more realistic description of the real ballast grains. It can therefore lead to lower number of material parameters since there is no need to compensate for too simplistic shape by adding phenomenological effects into the contact constitutive law. Due to complex shape, the mutual rotation and sliding between the polyhedral particles is partly obstructed. On the other hand the algorithms for polyhedral particles are typically much more time consuming. One needs to implement contact detection algorithm (whether two particles protrude each other or not) and evaluate the contact force, which is here related to the exact calculation of volume of the intersection. It results in significantly larger computational demands when comparing to the spherical shapes. The spherical grains have an advantage in short solution time, but the rolling resistance is usually included to compensate for shape simplification.
