Original Abstract

Reflections are considered not to be so critical factor in today optical networks. Optical amplifiers and transmitting lasers have in-built optical isolators suppressing fibre reflections and Rayleigh backscattering. The only critical factor is then double Rayleigh scattering which had negative impact on optical to signal to noise ratio. However emerging acess fibre networks also deploy optical amplification in bidirectional envinroment. Furthermore new applications transmitting very accurate or stable quantities rely on use bidirectional optical paths. This provides new opportunities both in research and practical deployment.

Keywords

double Rayleigh backscattering, erbium doped fibre amplifier, semiconductor optical amplifier, bidirectional transmission.
