Original Abstract

Experimental research was carried out in the laboratory of the Water Structures Institute in the period 1997 - 1999. Several experiments with sand dikes were performed. The height of dikes was about 0,9 m, length of the crest about 3,7 m. The process of breaching was observed and recorded to obtain data for calibration and verification of mathematical models. Seepage and dam breach has been photographed. Observation and monitoring of time dependent breach formation was realized using the method of the electrical impedance spectroscopy. The results of records were compared and plotted in cross and longitudinal profiles of the breach and three dimensional digital models of the breach were created. About 70 small dams in Czech Republic were breached during the catastrophical flood in August 2002. For the case study, the data were used from four breached ponds located in the South of the Czech Republic, ponds Melín, Metelský, Luh and Velký Bělčický. As the consequence of Melín and Metelský dams collapse, flood wave with the peak discharge over 550 m3/s occured. Large area of villages Metly and Předmíř was devastated and another four small dams downstream were also breached. Also, there were large damages in the city Blatná.
