Original Abstract

Alkali-activated slag binders have many advantages such as mechanical performance, durability and chemical resistance compared to ordinary Portland cement. However, they also have disadvantages such as increased shrinkage followed by the formation of microcracks. This paper presents the effect of shrinkage-reducing admixture Peramin SRA 40, polymer polyethylene glycol 1000 and polypropylene glycol on shrinkage and mechanical characteristics of alkali-activated slag concrete. These admixtures were used in different dosages in the range of 0–2.0% by mass of the slag. The results show that with increasing content of admixtures compressive and flexural strengths decreased. On the other hand, promising results in respect of shrinkage reduction were obtained particularly for polypropylene glycol where it reduced linear shrinkage of the reference mortar by up to 70%. The minimum decline of shrinkage was observed for 1% of Peramin SRA 40.
