Original Abstract

The aim of this study is to consider the relevance of in-situ measurements of bovine serum film thickness in the optical test device that could be related to the function of the artificial hip joint. It is mainly focused on the effect of the hydrophobicity or hydrophilicity of the transparent surface and the effect of its geometry. It is obvious that properties of the transparent surface, its geometry and kinematic conditions have significant effect the BS lubricant film formation. It has been shown that optical interferometry can provide new insight into the BS film forming properties; however, above mentioned factors must be considered to be able to obtain relevant data close to the behaviour of real artificial hip components.
