Original Abstract

Influence of aluminium content on corrosion behavior of AZ type magnesium alloys was evaluated. Set of samples of magnesium alloys AZ31 (3% Al) and two sets of AZ61 (6% Al) had been exposed to spray of 5% solution of sodium chloride for up to 42 days. In order to observe influence of intermetallic phase on the mechanism of corrosion, one set of AZ61 alloy samples was heat treated prior to corrosion exposure. Optimal conditions for complete dissolution of intermetallic phase were chosen based on heat treatment optimization. Interface between intermetallic phase and solid solution or secondary Al-Mn particles and solid solution served as initiation point for galvanic corrosion. In contrary, comparison of corrosion rate and corrosion mechanism of AZ61 alloy in initial state and after heat treatment showed, that presence of intermetallic phase and Al rich solid solution can act as barrier and slow down corrosion process.
