Original Abstract

Nowadays, a growing interest has arisen in the luminescence property of advanced phosphor materials in the vacuum ultraviolet region (VUV; l< 200 nm), triggered by the need for new VUV phosphors for mercuryfree fl uorescent tubes and displays. The high energy of the VUV photons can be used to solve the effi ciency problem as the energy of the VUV photons is more than twice the energy of a visible photon. It is in theory possible to obtain visible quantum effi ciencies of 200% under VUV excitation if for every VUV photon absorbed, two visible photons are emitted by the phosphor. This phenomenon is known as visible quantum cutting. Recently, the excellent luminescence properties of near-infrared (NIR) quantum cutting phosphors also demonstrate its potentiality to become identifi ed as a better candidate for application as down conversion layer on the top of crystalline silicon solar cell panels in order to reduce thermalization loss.
