Original Abstract

The importance of luminance analysis for the lighting quality evaluation is known well enough. However, the luminance distribution analysis can only be carried out on the condition of an objective luminance measurement in a sufficient number of examined pixels. Conventional methods of measurement with a luminance meter are very time-consuming and they also allow recording only a limited number of pixels without the use of an automated sensing system. The problem has been solved by special measuring CCD camera technology, which enables to sense hundreds of thousands pixels in a single image and thus obtain their luminance values. However, its cost is still too high for a wider use. Virtually the same principle is used also in common digital cameras and this leads to the question whether it is possible to make use of these devices already at present. The quality of commercial semiprofessional digital photography is quickly developing and, by contrast, its cost quickly decreases. Some specific properties of a digital camera have been examined in the scope of the GAČR (Grant Agency of the Czech Republic) project no. 102/01/D005. This article includes a brief characteristic of the special software that has been developed for the processing of digital photographs.
