Original Abstract

This paper is focused on localization of an earth fault using short-time additional earthing of unaffected (healthy) phase in supply substation. This method uses additional second earth fault, which is created in supply substation, to increase the fault current level for calculating the line reactance (distance) to fault point by a fault locator installed in outgoing feeder. Duration of this additional earth fault varies from 100 to 200 ms and is limited to value given by the time setting of overcurrent protection. The functionality of the method was verified during field tests, which were performed in the actual distribution network where the automatic for additional earthing is installed under pilot project. In the paper, function of the method and realized experimental measurements are described, as well the accuracy of calculated distance to fault point is evaluated for solid, resistive and arcing earth fault for ideally compensated, overcompensated and undercompensated state of MV distribution network
