Original Abstract

Epoxy adhesives are a possible means of bonding wood that meet the limiting requirements for usage with parts exposed to external conditions. In comparison with other common adhesives used for load-bearing structures, thermosets usually show brittle behavior and are vulnerable to crack propagation. The reason for epoxy modification by nano particles is the increasing fracture toughness, which results in greater resistance to defect propagation. It has been proven that the application of primer has a significant effect in preventing excessive stress at the interface, as its penetration leads to the stabilization of the surface layer of the wood. An experiment was carried out using spruce wood as an adherend for an epoxy system consisting of a modified primer epoxy layer and epoxy adhesive layer. The epoxy primer was modified using micro and nano carbon blacks with different mixture treatments. The tensile shear strength and wood failure criterion were observed at the one lap shear test with specimens exposed to different condition treatments to determine the possible influence of carbon black. Based on the experimental results, the nano carbon black reinforcing agent improved the tensile shear strength and increased the cohesive failure percentage after severe hygrothermal exposure. In contrast, in the same exposure treatment, the micro carbon black totally lost the adhesion to wood adherend. The significant effect of agglomeration of carbon black at both the scale level and at the fracture site was proved by SEM analysis.
