Original Abstract

The process of cross roll straightening of circular bars is simulated using FEM and Eulerian scheme of material flow through the machine. Initially curved bar rotates along its axis as it progresses through laterally staggered rolls, being loaded by a fluctuating bending moment beyond its elastic limit. Special program was developed , based on a beam-type finite element, Eulerian scheme of material flow along the straightened bar and nonlinear iterative solution of the elasto-plastic material behavior. Adopted strategy of Eulerian description makes the direct solution of the problem very efficient. Basic process characteristics like roller loading, product deflection, curvature and plasticization can be thus obtained very quickly from input data. It makes possible to find necessary intermeshing of rollers for given input data as a result of an iterative optimization process. Examples of this procedure together with developed algorithm are presented and discussed in the paper.
