Original Abstract

Since 10 Gbps bit rates are solution for high-speed transmission systems it is good to think of dispersion when it comes to upgrading existing gigabit passive optical network (PON) architectures. This paper deals with necessity of dispersion measurement for passive optical networks with a bit rate of 10 Gbps. The proposed simulation model, in Optsim 5.2 simulation software, enables us to assess, using detailed analyses of PON technologies, the impact of the splitting ratio on the maximal achievable distance of the system. The results are then compared with theoretical limits. To eliminate the influence of optical splitters on the total PMD value we have performed measurements of the planar and fusion splitters.
