Při výrobě odlitků je nutné zajistit v odlitku usměrněné tuhnutí, kdy fronta tuhnutí postupuje v odlitku od míst vzdálených od nálitku postupně až do nálitku. Usměrněnosti tuhnutí je dosahováno nálitkováním, použitím chladítek nebo nejčastěji kombinací nálitkování a použití chladítek. Slévárenská technologie rozlišuje několik typů chladítek podle jejich polohy vůči odlitku, podle tvaru a materiálu chladítka a způsobu uložení chladítka ve formě.

During manufacture of castings it is necessary to ensure the controlled solidification in the casting when the solidification front advances in the casting from the points distant from the riser gradually up into the riser. Controlled solidification is achieved by risering, by using the chills or most frequently by combining of risering and the use of chills.Foundry technologydifferentiates several types of chills according to their position towards the casting, according the chill shape and material and the way of placing the chill in the mould.
