Original Abstract

An overview of the twenty-year history, design and development of the system of teaching reading skills to engineering students in tertiary education, with a special focus on activities by which more advanced students could improve and cultivate this specific language skill. The characteristics of the first ESP course at the Depatment of Languages and its two main innovations are presented. The importance of teaching reading skills in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages as well as the importance of English for Specific Purposes is mentioned.
