Original Abstract

The paper deals with a modular-type high-temperature device where working gas is heated by electric arc. The design of the reaction chamber must ensure a required temperature, velocity, volume and dwelling time of the mixture in the reactor, or at its output with respect to the required utilization. Main design parameters of the arc heater as a source of heated gas are its input power, gas flow rate, efficiency, and last but not least, its steady operation. Based on numerous experimental results, the paper summarises the authors experience and tries to give recommendations useful for design and operation of similar devices.
