Original Abstract

The fringes of equal chromatic order (FECO) interference technique has been successfully used to measure thin lubricant films in concentrated contacts using miniature fiber optic spectrometer. The technique has been applied to both static and dynamic conditions. The central film thickness results obtained for naphtenic base oil and hexadecane have been compared to the thin film colorimetric interferometry (TFCI) measurements and very good agreement is found down to 3 nm. The technique resolution has been demonstrated by the study of film-forming properties of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane (OMCTS). The discretization of the lubricant film thickness has been observed for film thinner then 10 nm.
