Original Abstract

The volume of the present industrial production results in the increased air pollution. This means a negative effect not only on the environment, but even a harmful influence on materials of building structures. The increased deterioration of surroundings causes failures of structures which can significantly decrease the utility value of buildings and their durability. The corrosive effects of outer surroundings on concrete structures are significant, especially if the penetration of acidic gases into concrete is possible. The character of failures of concrete structures exposed to the surrounding of free atmosphere shows that it is necessary to pay attention to the study of the interaction between corrosive gases from the atmosphere and concrete as early as in the preparatory design, and then during the construction of engineering structures. In the text to follow, the attention is particularly paid to a brief summary of the present knowledge concerning the area of atmospheric concrete deterioration and the evaluation of damage caused by the atmospheric deterioration.
