Original Abstract

This paper is devoted to the design of a control system applied to an industrial DVD-video drive. For high-speed players the internal/external perturbations and actuator nonlinearities are important, and the performance requirements on the servo system are emphasized. A combined pole placement/sensitivity function shaping methodology is used for control design purposes to reduce the effect of external disturbances and disk defects. Controller order reduction is performed to allow its practical implementation and test robust stability and performance. To verify the stability margin of the whole system, the generalized stability margin is calculated. An uncertainty model, based on parametric description of the DVD mechanism, is considered in robustness validation of proposed controllers. The results of this analysis are included and tested on a real plant, in STMicroelectronics laboratories.
