Original Abstract

The paper describes research project concerning utilization of Wireless Ethernet (IEEE 802.11) for data acquisition of process information. As the wireless LAN technology is quite new, there is a need for knowledge of transmission parameters of the wireless networks as for throughput and delays. At present the standard Ethernet 10BaseT, 100BaseT (IEEE 802.3) and the wireless one (IEEE 802.11) is being used in general application. However it is expected the all mentioned versions would be deployed in the industry for process control purposes. If we review the requirements of control systems on transmitted data we can divide the communication subsystems into two major groups. Into the first group are communications that transport non-real time data or data that do not have strict requirements on timing. Examples of such communication are transmissions of configuration data and data used for visualization. The second group consists of real-time messages that have strict requirements on timing like real-time control data. Utilization of Ethernet technologies for control systems of the first group is very popular thanks to low cost of network components. However Ethernet uses non-deterministic media access method so some people consider Ethernet unsuitable for real-time purposes. However under some conditions the Ethernet is able to assure real-time performance so it is necessary to measure properties of various Ethernet configurations and variants.
