Original Abstract

The classical Lie contact transformations are defined only for the case of one dependent variable and appear through simple envelope of waves. The higher-order contact transformations act without any restriction and rest upon the focusing (or: cumulative) effects. Rather strange perspectives should be expected, e.g., explicit description of the locus of foci (the Monge problem), close links to the Bäcklund transformations and nontrivial examples of higher order external symmetries of differential equations.

Keywords

Jet space, Lie contact transformation, higher order contact transformation.
