Abstract

The development of the equipment was driven by a need to replace old analog low-level system of SPS accelerator in the CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) complex by a new one with the digital central control option. The SPS Phase shifter allows to change phase of signal which goes through the shifter. The phase change can be in range -180 to +180 deg and this value can be set manually or via dedicated SerialLink interface. The value of phase can be also calculated from additional information (phase slope, value of frequency program etc.). The phase shift is done by vector modulation of I/Q components of input signal. For the calibration purposes, calibration LabView software was developed. Due to this automatic calibration which produces feed-forward correction data, phase error is smaller than 0.5 deg in the entire frequency range. The equipment is based on FPGA device from Spartan 3A family. The SPS Phase shifter was produced in series of 20 pieces. The Phase shifter was developed in cooperation with the Department of radio electronics (BUT) and the CERN organization.
