Original Abstract

The paper presents a statistical model of terrestrial optical wireless links and results of practical measurements in Central Europe. The main phenomenon that influences terrestrial optical links is the atmospheric attenuation. It increases significantly during fog, heavy snow and rain and it may cut-off the link completely. As the attenuation is random in nature a statistical approach should be used. We present two models: the statistical model of random attenuations and the statistical model of fade durations. Both models are expressed by means of the exceedance probability functions. We have performed analysis of meteorological data for several sites in Central Europe. Results are presented in the last section. Both models serve for estimation of optical link availability before its actual installation.
