Original Abstract

The kinetic processes resulting in the pink afterglow emission in pure nitrogen are given. The main role play the vibrationally excited nitrogen ground state molecules that by v-v processes are populated to high excited levels which by pooling populates the radiative N2(B) and N2(C) states. Reactions of highly vibrationally excited ground state molecules with the other metastables, dominantly electronically excited N2(A), N2(a) and N2(a'), create also the molecular ion that N2+(B) states is populated by reactions with N2(X,v>11).
