Original Abstract

The most important principles of the so-called semi-probabilistic approach, which was used in the formulation and creation of the European standards EUROCODE, are listed in the article. Aspects, which may affect the varying degrees of design reliability of steel structures according to the EUROCODE standards, are discussed. The design reliability condition of EN1990 is based on the separation of load action effect and resistance. An example of a steel plane frame is used to illustrate the evaluation methodology of the design resistance according to the EN1990 and EUROCODE 3 standards. The above mentioned standards offer a number of evaluation possibilities of the design resistance. The computational model for the modelling of the elastic load-carrying capacity of frame structures is based on the finite element method and takes into account geometrical nonlinearities. Input random variables were considered according to results of experimental research. Differences in the design load-carrying capacities of a frame with four column height values in compression are determined. Results further include the evaluation of the statistical dependence between system imperfection and elastic load-carrying capacity and between elastic critical buckling load for global instability and elastic load-carrying capacity. The paper offers bases for the optimization and harmonization of technical rules and specifications for design of building structures.
