Original Abstract

Metallothioneins (MTs) are small cysteine-rich proteins that are involved in many diverse biological processes. These multifunction proteins constitute a superfamily. They are found not only in eukaryotes, but also in prokaryotic micro organisms. Although they keep analogical function, their primary structures are often diverse. Phylogenetic analysis reveals similarities and dissimilarities in sequence structures among various subfamilies of MTs.
