Original Abstract

The RTP (Real-time Transport Protocol) protocol is usually used to stream multimedia on the Internet. The RTCP (RTP Control Protocol) protocol is an accompanying protocol for the RTP and it is used for feedback transmission related to the multimedia transmitted. The bandwidth for RTCP protocol is firmly limited by to 5 % of total streaming bandwidth. This limitation causes large delays in sending RTCP (feedback) data from each receiver in large-scale sessions. For the purpose of solving this issue, a feedback transmission system involving end nodes and summarization nodes (feedback targets) organized into a tree structure is used. The system is based on a hierarchical feedback aggregation method, which reduces feedback reporting intervals when compared with the standard RTCP feedback transmission. In this paper, we introduce an optimization of this hierarchical structure in order to achieve the lowest feedback transmission intervals. Also, we introduce the TTP (Tree Transmission Protocol) protocol, which is used for the hierarchical structure organization. One of the most important properties of the protocol is awareness of the relative position of nodes involved in feedback transmission. The major motivation for utilizing relative positions is to optimize communication in the created overlay network used for RTCP feedback transmission.
