Original Abstract

Increases in the competitiveness of machining centres are conditional on them having a strict customer focus. It appears almost inevitable to use the system approach in order to assure quality in design and development, and thus to meet customers' requirements. Suitably modified QFD and FMEA methods of preventive quality assurance can be utilised in this process. These methods then form the backbone of quality design and development. This, however, is conditional on the support of an appropriate level of "quality spirit" within the company, which can be assisted by existing quality assurance systems in accordance with ISO 9000, which ensure that the responsibility for quality is spread throughout a company.
