Original Abstract

In last few years the industrial production is continually increasing as a result of this, there is a huge increase of production of waste materials. Large amount of industrial waste materials leads to creation of various dumps and their ecological defects. Besides the problems with deposition and liquidation of waste materials, there is another reason for using the waste materials - depleting reserves of natural sources. Therefore more and more often new ways of using waste materials are looked for. The research described in this paper is connected with the previous research performed at the Institute of Technology of Building Materials and Components, Faculty of Civil Engineering, Brno University of Technology, Czech Republic. Research at this Institute is for number of years aimed at utilization of industrial waste materials for production of new building materials. This paper describes the possibility of use of industrial waste materials, namely waste foundry sand, fly ash and blast furnace slag, as fillers into polymeric repair materials for protection and repair of reinforced concrete structures. The best combinations of polymeric resins with industrial waste materials are looked for in order to meet, for the final new repair materials, the requirements of present building industry. These new repair materials should protect reinforced concrete structures against corrosive environment and also extend their durability. Repair materials with waste fillers have to meet certain requirements, for example: high compressive and tensile strength, adhesion, low modulus of elasticity, high resistance to water penetration, resistance to different kind of chemical corrosive media, frost resistance etc. Not only the ecological effect, but also the economical effect should be the main motivation for waste materials producers, because the price of waste fillers is in comparison with natural sources, such as silica sand, expressively lower. For that reason, the possibility of utilization of industrial waste materials as fillers into polymeric repair materials seems to be an interesting alternative for waste processing. The use of waste materials is a positive step to improve environmental conditions and of course a great promise to improve the environment for future generations.
