Original Abstract

New oil tanks are being constructed in last two years in order to increase the state reserves of oil. These are round steel shell tanks with fixed or floating roof. Tanks are very sensitive to differential settlements. Two locations in Moravia region were chosen for placing oil tanks. One location is in southern Moravia in place of already existing oil tanks. The other one was positioned in northern Moravia. Both locations can be characterized from geotechnical point of view with presence of soft soils (clay). Because these soils are very compressible, the suitable solution of foundation had to be found. Two possible solutions were proposed, one solution utilizing deep foundations and the other one using ground improvement by stone columns. The latter was designed by authors of this paper. In the first stage of construction on the first location, deep foundation on piles was chosen. Loading test resulted in differential settlements which were critical for structural stability of the tank shell. This tank had to be adjusted with extreme costs. In the second stage, the solution utilizing stone columns was used. The aim of this paper is to introduce design philosophy of ground improvement for foundation purposes used in the Czech Republic. The use of software (IDA NEXIS modul SOILIN) with parameters defined for improved soil by design method -Štěpánek. The design is demonstrated on two case studies - oil tanks in southern and northern Moravia with partial measurements.
