Original Abstract

The increasing importance of reliability assessment in civil engineering has caused intensive research in developing permanent monitoring and vibration based damage identification methods. Natural frequencies, mode shapes, and modal damping have found major interest as identification characteristics because of the appealing fact that modal parameters are invariants of structures. Any structural change, including damage, is associated with changes of modal parameters.
