Original Abstract

The PDA (Phase Doppler Anemometer) is well known as one of the most useful techniques to study particle velocity and particle size distributions in two-phase flows. There are many variations to the setup of this diagnostic system, especially its geometrical parameters. Research of effervescent atomization, on a dense spray of the near-nozzle region in particular, shows that it is necessary to carry out a functionality analysis of the PDA system for such applications. The off-axis angle (scattering angle) has the essential influence on signal quality. Thus, a set of experiments has been carried out with one pressure nozzle under the same operation conditions for values of off-axis angle in the range of 30 -80 . The PDA user guide recommends a value of 73.7 as the optimum angle. Theoretically, there is no influence on acquired values of particular velocity, but this idea may be affected if the carrier of the velocity is not detected.
