Original Abstract

The proposed paper deals with characterization of bit-error rate of free-space optical (FSO) links. The majority of commercially available links uses simple on-off keying for data transmission and is based on components developed for fiber applications. But the atmospheric optical channel differs significantly from optical fiber. Received optical power fluctuates due to atmospheric turbulences. The "period" of fluctuations is in the order of milliseconds. The fluctuations cause short-term interruptions of data stream that interfere with communication protocols. For example, the interruptions decrease the congestion window of the TCP protocol. The actual data throughput is then a fraction of physical capacity of the link. A proper characterization of the channel is a key factor for the development of new communication protocols compatible with FSO.
