Original Abstract

The ATM layer is the layer above the physical layer. Its characteristic features are independent of the physical medium. Four functions of this layer have been identified: In the transmission direction, cells from individual VPs and VCs are multiplexed into one resulting cell stream by the cell multiplexing function. At the receiving side, the cell demultiplexing function splits the arriving cell stream into individual cell flow appropriate to the VP or VC.VPI and VCI translation are performed at ATM switch nodes and/or at cross-connection nodes. Within a VP node the value of VPI filed of each incoming cell translated into a new VPI value for outgoing cell .The value of the VPI and VCI are translated into new value at VC switch.
