Original Abstract

itNanoparticle Enhanced Laser-Induced Breakdown (NELIBS) has been proposed for the firsttime as a methodology for improving the sensitivity of LIBS, several papers on NELIBSapplications has been published and the number of laboratories that are working on thisapproach is continuously growing. To the growing interest in NELIBS applications, is notcorresponding an adequate effort to understand the basic mechanisms allowing theenhancement in Laser ablation based techniques, when nanostructures are used for thesample preparation. This talk is aimed to clarify the outstanding advantages but also theimplicit limits of NELIBS, in order to outline when NELIBS is recommended and when itsadvantages do not worth the use of NELIBS with respect to conventional LIBS. For this task, fundamental aspects of laser-NP interaction as well as classical drawbacks of LIBS will bediscussed.
