Original Abstract

In the present study, white mustard (Sinapis alba L.) was treated with an aqueous dispersion of cadmium telluride QDs. Two types of QDs were tested. First, QDs capped with coating ligand 3-mercaptopropionic acid (CdTe-MPA) and second, QDs coated with silica shell (CdTe/SiO2). After a short-term toxicity test (72 hours exposure), several macroscopic end-points were monitored. The total cadmium content in different plant parts was determined with inductively-coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) in order to distinguish the way cadmium coming from different sources accumulate in S. alba. The most important part was the plants analysis done by laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) so that the spatial cadmium distribution in plant tissues was determined. LIBS was beneficially applied to map cadmium distributed in large-scale samples (analytical spot size compared to the sample size) in short time with a sufficient resolution in tens of micrometres. Based on observed results, we concluded a consideration of possible hazardous effects of coated and uncoated QDs on S. alba as a crop plant.
