Original Abstract

A proper description of the crack propagation in real structures is a crucial task of the fracture mechanics. Various fracture criteria for description of the frac-ture response are derived and tested at cracked specimens of different shapes, loads and boundary conditions. These criteria can be of one-parameter or multi-parameter nature. Whereas the one-parameter fracture mechanics is quite well-described and can be applied correctly for brittle materials, the multi-parameter fracture mechanics is still under extensive studies. It has been shown that it can be useful for assessment of crack behavior in materials where the fracture oc-curs in a larger zone around the crack tip. This can be typical for elastic-plastic or quasi-brittle materials. In this work several various geometric configurations of the double cantilever beam are investigated. Although the crack is loaded in mode I, it can deflect from its original direction under some conditions. This phenomenon is investigated by means of the one-parameter as well as multi-parameter fracture mechanics. A generalized form of the maximum tangential stress fracture criterion is applied in order to investigate the initial crack propa-gation direction. The finite element method is used for the numerical simula-tions. The results obtained are discussed thoroughly.
